Reynosa Simmentals

Jack & Darlene Houlton

Cow/Calf Operation

Although we started as a commercial cow/calf breeder, in 1984 we changed with the purchase of our first Simmental bull. We have worked our way up to having 90% of our herd purebred, with the remainder being a percentage. We are also very proud of the fact that all our cows and also their dams have been born and bred by us. We do brind in new bulls almost every year for different and better bloodlines. This closed herd policy allows us to maintain a stringent vaccination program as well as health records for our herd.

Along with being on the VBP program, we are also on the Express Verified program, and have had a herd health program developed specifically for our herd by our veterinarian. Although our cattle are mostly purebred, we sell our calves commercially in the fall. Except for a few hand picked bull calves and purebred heifers.

Based on these excellent health records, our herd qualified for a Western Canada Beef Productivity Study in 2001. This was conducted by the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. We have been members of the Canadian Simmental Association for 25 years, and are very active in various community organizations.
